What is roller brake testing?
Roller brake testing is an essential part of ensuring that your vehicle or fleet is roadworthy and safe. All commercial vehicles or trailers are advised to complete four successful brake efficiency tests annually to measure the vehicle’s braking system while stationary. This process allows us to assess the braking force for each wheel and identify if there is any imbalance across the axles. At K.E. Kent, we are fully equipped to perform roller brake testing as a standalone service, as part of your regular vehicle maintenance or as part of a pre-MOT preparation check.
What does a roller brake test do?
A roller brake test is designed to ensure the road safety of your vehicle and to see a visual representation of the performance of your brake system. A roller brake test:
- Checks the braking force for each individual wheel.
- Checks for any imbalances across the axles.
- Tests emergency and parking brakes.
- Tests brake discs for warping and wear.

How often do I need to get my brakes tested?
It is advised that vehicles should undergo four brake tests throughout the year, once within your annual MOT test and then again every 13 weeks following this.
How is roller brake testing done?
Roller brake testing can be completed in a few simple steps. Here’s how we do it:
- The vehicle is driven onto the brake tester with its wheels centrally located between two larger main rollers.
- We will enter the vehicle details.
- Once the vehicle details have been entered the rollers are then automatically switched on and rotate at a designated and consistent speed.
- The vehicle’s brakes are then applied by the operator to createa force on the motor.
- A transducer measures the braking force of each wheel as the vehicle decelerates.
- During the process fluctuation is also measured to determine the safe balance of braking force between near and off-side wheels calculating the difference in percentage form.
- We will provide you with a roller brake test report.
How much does a roller brake test cost?
